My mom could walk into a hard room and somehow make it feel less frightening.
He carried long shifts, tired feet, calm hands, and caring for strangers before coming home to care for us. Most people only saw the outside of it, but the people closest to him saw what it cost.
Then I asked, "Can a ring hold the kind of gentleness that still has steel underneath it?"
That is when I realized her strength was not loud; it was steady enough for people to lean on. She carried other people's fear with grace and still found tenderness for her own family.
What we wanted to say was simple: thank you for being gentle and strong.
