  1. Robert says:

I believe you mean Hermano Grande

  2. Jc says:

    Not exactly ironic…

  3. jelly says:

    I don’t get it?

  4. Brewski says:

Some Ironies are more equal than others.

  5. epicnamefail says:

    Someone please illubricate the situation?

  6. Galane says:

George Orwell wrote “Nineteen Eighty-Four” back in 1949, about the far future year of 1984 where everyone was constantly watched by video cameras.

Also look up “doublethink”, then closely scrutinize just about anything any politician says.

  7. Ryan says:

Umm, guys. The sign says “George Orwell.” He was the author of 1984. Get it yet?

    No? Okay…

    Ever heard of “Big Brother?”

    • Fuzzy says:

it’s no use ryan, kids don’t read books these days!

      • Tyler says:

Hey, I don’t think it’s fair that you said that, Fuzzy. I’m 16, and I’ve read that book three times. It’s one of my favorites.

        • Pen says:

Yeah, really Fuzzy. I’m 15, and I read 1984 when I was 12, along with Animal Farm. I’ve been GROUNDED for READING in class. Yeah, kids don’t read these days. Sheesh.

          • Some Guy says:

Most kids don’t read these days. There are exceptions. That was the case in my youth (20-30 years ago) and as far as I can tell it hasn’t changed.

            • Amy says:

I’m 14 and I read 1984 when I was 10 and Animal Farm when I was 11. But of course kids don’t read books that’s why the books I want to read are always out of my school library, because it couldn’t be that people have got them out to read them could it?

              • Leigha says:

I think you guys are being a little oversensitive here. Most kids DON’T read. I almost always have a book with me, and I can’t even begin to say how many times I’ve been looked at oddly for it or told “reading is so boring.”

Most of the kids at my school acted like reading a book was torture. I personally can’t fathom not reading, but…okay?

      • kye14 says:

ive lost around 40 boks for reading in english class (if only i had a picture)

  8. Cody says:

George Orwell wrote the book “1984″, which was about a possible future in which the government *watches* everything and controls everyone.

  9. Jandrocafe says:

George Orwell wrote “Animal Farm”, among other things, and was an outspoken advocate against communism and the invasion of privacy of citizens by the government.

Hence the irony of his name being on a government sign cautioning people that they are being recorded by security cameras.

It is actually quite ironic, provided that you know the backstory.

  10. Kars says:

You can lookup the film ’1984′ if you don’t have the time to read the book “1984″. A title that the publisher gave; but the original title Eric Blair had in mind (George Orwell’s real name) was “The last man”.

In the year 1984 many people were expecting this prophetic book to become an instant reality, in failing this it showed why the title given by the publisher takes away from Eric Blair’s warning of a bureaucratic totalitarian tyranny.

It’s not hard to find that every warning in the book has become true, and like the book predicts the common people – ‘The pawls” have little notion how they are managed and abused by the elite through the hands of fearful, short vision’s, middle men.

  11. Mike says:

I don’t care if you’ve read his work, one should know about him and what it means for something to be “Orwellian”, if only for its relevance to the world today.

  12. Maku says:

It’s the George Orwell Square, in Barcelona. Ironically, it was the first place in the city where cameras were installed on the streets.

    • anon says:

And not so ironically, Plaza George Orwell and nearby Carrer dels Escudillers were the most likely places for tourists to get robbed.

      • Paul says:

It’s where the city’s drug dealers moved to in 1992, when the olympics came to town, and the main plazas were made tourist-friendly.

Even today, it’s not somewhere I feel 100% safe in.

  13. Eric says:

And Orwell fought in Spain against the fascists, which is why the square is named after him.

  14. michael says:

it should be pointed out that the powers that be of orwell’s day were not so different than todays”leaders”. doublespeak has always been a tool of the wealthy and elite to deceive and control the masses. he wrote of these things as commentary on the state of the world of his day, not only to warn us of the future in which we now live.

  15. Person says:

I didn’t get it at first, but now I do! Thanks to all the people who explained it.

  16. Me says:

Its fun – I live nearby that place and never realized that :)

  17. Amy says:

hahaaa.. I live in Barcelona and my first pass by this place I noticed this right away and thought to myself.. that is so ironic… and now I see it here.. oh the irony!

  18. Aviatrix says:

Gasp! I hoped that the street name was photoshopped in when I first saw that.

  19. Chut Pata says:

Guess who signed the bill that allowed government to force telephone companies to eavesdrop on private calls on behalf of government. No it was no commie president. It was George W. Bush who signed on this nefarious bill that took away our privacy. The movie “Demolition Man” predicted USA will become a fascist country under conservative rule with Arnold Schwarzenegger as president. Luckily, he was not born in the USA and only become governor of the biggest state.

    • Adam says:

You think California is the biggest state?
Suddenly it makes sense that you’re predicting the future with Stallone movies.

      • Big Brother says:

You’re thinking “biggest” in terms of area on the globe. Chut Pata is using “biggest” in terms of population.

This is another example why all of you should stop resisting Newspeak. Sheesh.

      • Chut Pata says:

Da. The state with 54 electoral vote would be California, unlike Texas with 34 electoral votes. Then, you might consider Texas as the biggest state simply because Dubya got himself Texan governorship, thanks you daddy.

    • fernblatt says:

One can only run for president if they are born in us or one of it’s commonwealths. etc. (no comments about Obama – hawaii wasn’t a state, but it was a US possession, which for sake of citizenship, postal service, etc are pretty much the same, sort of.)

      • Big Brother says:

Not entirely true, but you’re right: such a discussion does not belong here. After all, there is no conspiracy.

        I said so.

        :D

  20. Jasper says:

I love added irony from outside sourses. As soon as I had read over this picture the first thing I hear is “Watching you…” from my media player, which happened to be playing “Haunted” by Evanescence. Already this pic was great and that made it better.

  21. cityofirony says:

Yeah, we do stuff like this in Texas all the time. I just don’ t think we actually put up signs, though. Like, we closed the city library and locked the book drops too!!! Well, ok, but the books have to come back, right? I just do not get it.

  22. MJlove says:

But we love Big Brother, he keeps us out of Room 101 :O

  23. Someone please illubricate the situation?
